Watching the colors turn on the leaves And the grey squirrel gathering While the stellar jay’s yelling at him How then shall I live? Following fireflies in the grass Catch one glowing in my hands While the thunder is rolling past How then shall I live? All I want for you is to walk the earth and know that you belong to her, She’ll give you what you need All I ask is you not take too much Love her for the rest of us, we are her children too Alone in the night, surfing down the waves Looking up at the Milky Way Sails are full, smile is on my face How then shall I live? Ripples glow as I jump in Feel cold water on my skin Stars above are reflecting in How then shall I live? All I want for you is to walk the earth and know that you belong to her, She’ll give you what you need. All I ask is you not take too much. Love her for the rest of us, we are her children too Look into the deep pools of your eyes. heart is pounding a great surprise. How can one so small be so wise? How then shall I live?

The Visiting 04:50
If I come back tomorrow And every day patiently, Will you tell of your sorrow? Open yourself to me. If I sit here with you Listening silently, Will you share your secrets If I carry them close to me? Come home The land is alive and is whispering She will teach you her song if you’re listening Breathing in, what does it mean, You, black bear, visiting? Shooting stars, two at a time Just as I ask for a sign. Come home The land is alive and is whispering She will teach you her song if you’re listening Come home The land is alive and is whispering She will show you your soul if you’re listening Endless life is dancing right in front of my eyes I try to keep wide open Endless light is dancing right in front of my eyes I try and keep it still Endless life is dancing right in front of my eyes I try to keep wide open Endless light is dancing right in front of my eyes I try and keep it still If I come back tomorrow

The River 04:06
Come down to the river and Take this stone soft in your hand. Give it all the hurt you have. Gratefulness is all that’s left. Be free You have all you need. Take this song. Know that you’re safe and belong. Born you are from the stars And in your blood flows the river Listen to the healing sound. Feel your feet held by the ground. And what did the river say? All your worries wash away. Be free You have all you need Take this song Know that you’re safe and belong Born you are from the stars, And in your blood flows the river. Born you are from the stars, And in your blood flows the river.

The Drum 04:07
Let me be a sacred drum you play upon Let me always be in tune, with your song And may I resonate Skin stretched upon this frame And if every song is a prayer I’ll send one out Join in with everything that’s grateful And with this gift I will be generous Go down to the water’s edge in the morning Listen in the stillness for your song to sing And may you resonate Skin stretched upon this frame And if every song is a prayer Let’s sing one out Join in with everything that’s grateful And with this gift I will be generous With this gift I will be generous With this gift I will be generous

about

These songs were written as part of my research for a Masters of Education program focusing on place based ecological pedagogy. Much gratitude to my place based ecological friends, colleagues and mentors and to the places and experiences out of which these songs grew. Thank you to the Katzie and Kwantlen nations for stewarding these lands since time immemorial.

about

Christopher John Vancouver, British Columbia

Music is medicine.

I don't have as much time as i'd like to make music these days, but if the music I make is able to be medicine to someone... to bring some healing, or just a good feeling, then it will have been time well spent.

"The purpose of life is to find your gift. The work of life is to develop it. The meaning of life is to give your gift away." - unknown
